    Windows 7 RC

Today I spent some times on installing Windows 7 RC. The experience was smooth, I encountered no problem at all when I install it on my 2 years old Lenovo X60s. My X60s is on 945 chipset and Aero effect works well on it.

The first difference that I notice was the taskbar. It’s a very much welcome addition. You can easily launch application from it, also getting application status from it. For example you can see a progress bar on it when you are downloading files on Internet Explorer. There is another feature that I guess a lot of people are dying for, that is a finer control over UAC. Personally I do not have any problem with the UAC at all, even on Vista. However I do agree it’s annoying to repeatedly ask you the same question. Most people avoid that by completely switching off the UAC, right now on Windows 7 you can preserve the security while having less prompt. You can setup the UAC in a way such that the UAC will only prompt you for confirm IF the modification was trigger by a program. That is, if it’s trigger by you, pressing a button, it is NOT going to ask you the same question again and again.

I am installing various beta product right now, such as sliverlight 3. I am going to give more review later.

(This entry was my first post composed using Windows Live Writer.)

    Tru 2nd Gen UMPC?

I discover that this UMPC 'Vega' is selling in MongKok. It's eye catching as it is really small in size. The shape is pretty weird, a bit thick, long, but overall it's very small. It smaller than my Sony U series. I went to their web site to check it out and find that they provide another model call 'Everun' (Check out the video!). It quite cool! What's I really would like to look into is they are claiming 7 to 12 hours of REAL battery life. That's what I want!

The spec is kind of weird though, some highlight:
    • AMD CPU at low frequency, I guess 500Mhz or something?
    • Only 512mb ram
    • No Vista
    • HSDPA integrated (it's on the web site but the shop keeper in Mongkok didn't mention it. Not sure if it works in HK.)
    • SSD drive
    • Act as a external USB harddisk

Just thinking getting a new UMPC, my 256mb Sony U8G should be retired. I am also looking at OQO model 02.

    Windows Vista RC1 upgraded

Just get my IBM X41T installed with Vista RC1. Installation was smooth. It recognized my Hauppauge WinTV PVR2 USB2 Encoder, which allow me to run MCE and view live TV. Previously beta 2 does not recognized the device. Vista also recognize my notebook as TabletPC. Although most hardware buttons are not working, I discovered a feature that is new to me, that is "Flicks". By using "flicks", I can swing my pen horizontally from left to right to denote a "forward", right to left for a "backward", which is actually a "mouse gesture" feature. I haven't tried this feature thoroughly but I think it will be a very good one and increase the usability of applications. It is good that if Microsoft allow developers to extend it. It currently support 8 direction swing which maps to 4 navigation action and 4 editing action (copy/paste/etc). May be this is not a new function but I just discovered it.

    GPRS

I was using Peoples GPRS for a month and everything was great, speed is ok, EDGE supported. Combined with my hw6965 I am able to get on MSN all the time and be alerted when there is new mail arrive. Checking email on the road is great!

However my mobile number are subscribed thru Sunday, I would like to consolidate my bill and use one SIM card, therefore I switched to Sunday 5 days ago. During these 5 days, it is like nightmare. The GPRS mysteriously disconnected while the signal is showing full. MSN keep disconnect every minute. On IE, you never able to load one whole page, all pages timeout in the middle and EDGE is not supported. You can't even get a signal at urban area like Central... Terrible isn't it?

Finally I terminated the Sunday plan and will switch back to Peoples.

    HP hw6965

I'm back, WM5! I bought the hw6965 few days ago. I love the little iPAQ very much, reminded me the time when I just bought the classic iPAQ. Hw6965 is a Blackberry like device, quad-band, wifi bluetooth plus GPS device. It suits my needs very well. The keyboard is lovely. In fact, I'm using it now to type this blog entry, with the new live spaces mobile. And the GPS is nice, it allow you to attach the GPS info to a picture when you take one with the built in 1.3mp cam. PS. If you plan to buy English version like me, please note after installing chinese viewer (ce-star / monster), the GPS stop working. It throws LtoManager.exe unknown exception. Please let me know if anyone knows the cure.

    My XBOX 360!

Yeah I love it! I slept at 4:00am and Daniel slept at 6:00am.

For the Xbox 360 experience, it is great! I unpack the box, everything is so nice and neat. Unpack all the thing, plug in the power adaptor, my VGA cable, connecting it to my 19" LCD, here we go! Xbox 360 logo is up! Very nice graphics, very clean on my LCD. The setup and the interface is very neat too. Although not as easy to use as MCE, the interface is very good looking.

Okay! So I tried to plug in my game controller. Oh? I forgot the controller is wireless. Isn't it I need to plug a receiver on to the machine like others? However I do not find one in the package. Quickly I find a small "connect" button on both xbox and the controller (like what we have on the wireless mouse). By pressing both of them, my controller light up and connected as 1P! No receiver is needed! Cool.

First thing to do is to configure the xbox. It is SOOOOOO nice that it can display up to 1280x1024 on my 19" LCD. Trying to get on Xbox Live, it wasn't straight forward, the network failed. I am using the wireless LAN adapter. The adapter is very nice, it is very small white stick and there is slot which allow you to click and attach the adapter to the xbox body. The setup is not automatic as I expected. Since my wireless network is secured. I have to put all those keys and IP address manually. After all setup is done, the xbox live show connected! I can just use my passport account to login and after a few step I am registered! (It is so cool that I get one month free Gold membership trial.)

(However inputting text was not fun and I don't even know what the Chinese input method is that?! I guess it is the pin yin used in Taiwan.)

After the xbox live setup I am eager to push in my Ghost Recon game disc. The graphics is stunning!!! So real! It is 1280x1024! (I do not own any modern display card and is using notebook so I never have any 3D game on this resolution).

I walkthru the training mission. Excellent graphics, the control is a bit complicate but it is manageable. The system is cool, you can control your team member as well as combat truck/tank and some kind of flying saucer which do spy on your enemies over the sky.

I can't wait to test the other function so I quit the game in the middle of mission 1. I tried to put in my Joey concert DVD and it play fine. It's crystal clean on my LCD. For audio it should be able to do 5.1 or something but I am just using stereo.

Another interesting feature are the xbox live marketplace, I browsed it and find a lot of interesting demos and some classic game. I am not sure is there something wrong, I am expecting to see "Street fighter" on the classic arcade list but I don't. Most game contains free trial, and you can order them with "points" which I don't have. Classics arcade demos are around 20-30Mb and Xbox games demos are much larger like 600Mb. You can also download trailers, they are HD quality. I tried to download, but the speed is very slow. (I am using HGC).

(Mind you, if you cancelled a download, you have to manually go to memory management to delete the uncompleted file. Otherwise the storage is not freed. The whole file size is allocated once you start the download.)

I downloaded a classic arcade named robot something, it is fun! very simple game, just shoot them. As it is a trial, it just stop me from playing after 1 round which is VERY short, like 30 secs. And then it keep prompting me to purchase full version. I am going to download RR6 and Quark 4 demo later, I hope they allow me to play at least a few more minutes.

As I have to delete the uncompleted download, I went to the memory management. And I found that my harddisk is just 11G. Why?! I am scared! Isn't 20G?! By looking carefully I find the factory default harddisk are loaded with tons of trailer and music! There is a titanic clip and it is very good. It started by showing the old lady Rose, which her skin texture and wrinkles are so clean. You can see a lot of details.

After that I pulled a few my old xbox game disc, I tried to run DOA3 and Spikeout. DOA3 runs after system updates but Spikeout don't. I am upset about this as I am a big fans of Spikeout!!! Come on!!! Release the patch!!!

Then I browsed thru the interface of the xbox, there is a lot of function there, mp3, photo, MCE, etc. As I am very very sleepy I can only wait tmr. I really want to see how the MCE extension works.

(By the way, it is quite disappointed that my MCE is still unable to download programme guide.)

Overall, the experience is exciting, I am very happy about the xbox 360 so far. I wish it just keep release more games, Halo2, etc.

    My gametag is "lijack".

Lucky day, I must buy NDS Lite soon

This is a lucky day! I lost my bag on taxi and I lost my Dopod 900, my NDS and some other stuff.

I buy my Dopod 900 on 6th Jan, he is just a more than one month old baby. I regret that I didn't take any photo of him, what I left now is the outlook data and no machine to sync to. God bless you, 900. I wish you can find a new nice owner and don't have to sit in the second hand store for too long. If we are lucky, may be we will meet again when I shop at those second hand store. Hope that I still recognize you, but I hope that you don't recognize me and got hard resetted.

Second lucky thing is I didn't buy my 4G SD card yet so I saved around $2000.

The third thing is I lost my NDS now so I can buy the new NDS Lite when it is out on 2nd March.
(My BioHazard game card is gone too.)

The real lucky thing is I have my wallet and card holder with me.

    My Dopod 900

Just bought a Dopod 900, to celebrate my MVP renewal!  Data migration was so smooth, good job, Microsoft!

My next target for my Chinese New Year gift includes D200 and Xbox 360. I really feel like I am working for Microsoft as when I finished all programming works, go home watching MCE TV, tired of the show and start the Xbox 360 for games, carrying WM5.0 device all day. The only non-MS device I have now is digital camera and portable game device. When will Microsoft produce Xbox-mobile and DigitalCam.NET?

Lastly, I want to thanks all my friends, MS employee, for the support and love during my MVP period, thanks for your help and understanding! Looking forward for a great 2006. Best wishes to all of you!

Battery Journal: How does the PSP battery hold up?

The biggest question people seem to be having about the PSP concerns its battery life...

...the battery died after about four hours and fourty-five minutes of five different games and one hour of MP3 play. We didn't use the WiFi features of the system at all during this time....
